How Much Does Sod Installation Cost in Georgia? (2026 Pricing Guide)

By Liba Landscape May 21, 2026 7 min read

The most common question we get before a sod estimate is "How much does it cost?" The honest answer is that it depends on factors we cannot assess over the phone: square footage, ground conditions, grass variety, and how much prep work the site needs. But there are real ranges we can give you, and this guide walks through all of them.

Sod Pricing in Georgia: What to Expect

There are two numbers to understand: the material cost (sod only) and the installed cost (labor plus materials plus prep).

Grass Variety Material Only (per sq ft) Basic Installed (per sq ft)
Bermuda $0.35 – $0.55 $1.00 – $1.50
Zoysia $0.45 – $0.65 $1.10 – $1.60
Tall Fescue $0.40 – $0.55 $1.00 – $1.50
St. Augustine $0.45 – $0.65 $1.10 – $1.60

"Basic installed" means a site that is already reasonably prepped: the ground is relatively level, drainage is adequate, and no significant regrading or topsoil addition is needed. Jobs that require regrading, topsoil, and more extensive site prep run $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot or more, depending on the extent of work.

What Drives Cost Up

These are not padding items. They reflect real labor and material costs:

  • Poor soil condition. Heavy clay compaction that requires topsoil amendment adds material and labor cost. Georgia's red clay is famously difficult, many sites need 2 to 4 inches of topsoil before sod will root properly.
  • Significant regrading needed. Low spots that hold water, slopes that need correction, grade that pitches toward the foundation, all require grading work before sod goes down. Grading is not optional; sod installed on a site with drainage problems will fail.
  • Large debris removal. Rocks, old roots, construction debris, and thick organic matter all need to come out before sod can be laid. Debris removal adds to both labor time and disposal cost.
  • Difficult site access. If equipment cannot reach the work area, everything gets handled manually. Manual labor is more expensive than machine labor.
  • Irregular shapes. Lots of cutting and fitting around curves, trees, and obstacles adds installation time.

What Drives Cost Down

Favorable site conditions reduce the per-square-foot cost:

  • Simple rectangular or square areas with minimal cutting
  • Flat ground with no grading required
  • Already-prepped soil with good drainage
  • Easy equipment access (truck and equipment can get close to the work area)
  • Larger square footage (unit cost decreases on bigger jobs)

When your site has favorable conditions, the installed cost is closer to the lower end of the range. When multiple cost-driving factors are present, expect the upper end or above.

Liba Landscape provides written estimates on sod installation across Newton County and the surrounding area. We assess the site, measure the space, and give you a number you can count on before any work begins.

Why Ground Prep Matters More Than the Sod

The most common reason new sod fails is inadequate ground prep, not bad sod. Sod laid on compacted Georgia clay without proper grading, topsoil, and debris removal establishes shallow roots that cannot survive the summer heat. By August, the sod is brown and dying. By fall, you are looking at redoing the job.

The sod itself is a small fraction of the total job cost. The labor, grading, and prep materials are the larger portion. Cutting corners on prep to save money on material costs more in the long run when the sod has to be redone a season later. A good sod job, done right once, lasts years. A cheap sod job done on inadequate prep often needs to be redone.

This is why we walk the property before quoting. We need to see what the soil condition is, what the grade is doing, whether there is a drainage issue, and how much debris needs to come out. Without seeing the site, we cannot give you a meaningful number.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

Phone quotes for sod are not reliable. Square footage, site conditions, and prep needs vary too much. What you need is a site visit and a written estimate. We assess the area, identify what prep is needed, measure the space, and give you a written number before any work begins. No ballpark figures, no surprises on invoice day.

The site visit typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. We look at the area being sodded, note the soil conditions, check the grade, and identify any drainage issues that need to be addressed before the sod goes down. From that visit, we can give you an accurate written estimate.

Bermuda vs. Zoysia vs. Fescue: Which Is Right for Georgia?

Grass variety is not just a cost decision, it is a performance decision. The wrong variety for your conditions will fail regardless of how well the prep work is done.

Bermuda: Best for full sun, high traffic, and warm months. Goes dormant (brown) in winter. The most drought-tolerant warm-season option. If your lawn gets 6 or more hours of direct sun and needs to handle foot traffic, Bermuda is usually the right choice in Newton County and surrounding areas.

Zoysia: Dense, crowds out weeds naturally, full to partial sun. Slower to establish than Bermuda but lower maintenance once it fills in. Dormant in winter. Slightly softer feel underfoot than Bermuda. Good choice for lawns that get some shade and lower traffic.

Tall Fescue: Stays green year-round, handles shade better than warm-season grasses. Requires overseeding in fall to stay thick because it thins out in summer heat. Not drought-tolerant; needs consistent irrigation during dry stretches. Best for shaded lawns where Bermuda or Zoysia would thin out.

St. Augustine: Better suited for coastal Georgia and areas south of Atlanta. Struggles with cold snaps in the metro area and northern Georgia counties. We do not recommend it for Newton County properties.

When we walk your property, we will note the sun exposure in each area and recommend the right variety, or a combination of varieties if your yard has both sun and shade zones.
